Background
Brownsville's motto is "On the Border, By the Beach and Beyond." We are surrounded the the Mexican border, the Gulf of Mexico and South Padre Island and the grand state of Texas above us. It takes 12 hours to drive from Brownsville to El Paso, 14 hours to Texline (on the tip of the Pan Handle, border to New Mexico and Oklahoma), 10 hours straight north to Oklahoma border and 8 hours to Vinton, Louisiana.
Texas is HUGE! covering 268,596 square miles 😱. The RGV lies at the most southern point in the continental United States. Most people refer San Antonio as South Texas but the RGV lies about 250 miles further south called Deep South Texas.
The RGV spans roughly 100 miles long and 50 miles wide. The major cities are Brownsville (pop. 194,415 est.), Harlingen (pop. 72,574), McAllen (pop. 152,205) and Edinburg (pop. 112,735), estimates for 2026.
Brownsville, TX
Brownsville was founded in 1848 across from Matamoros, Tamaulipas, Mexico, which was founded in 1824 (depending on who you ask it was settled much earlier as far back as 1774). Matamoros current population is roughly 540,236 in 2025.
Brownsville's current land area covers ~145.2 square miles. It's the largest city in the RGV with McAllen close behind. The area's climate is humid subtropical climate with a strong semi-tropical influence. Some days it's hot and humid other days it's as hot as an oven🔥.
Brownsville is 20 miles from South Padre Island, a hotspot for tourists looking for that island vibe 🏝️. It's an island barrier reef about 1/2 wide. Beautify beaches, sand and waves. It's connected to the only bridge called the Queen Isabela Causeway.
Brownsville is now the ONLY connection to the new town called Starbase, TX, founded in 2025, location of SpaceX Starship 🚀 manufacturing an launch site. This is now a new tourist and visitor destination from people around the world.

The Gladys Porter Zoo is a visitor-oriented zoological and botanical park, dedicated to the preservation of nature through education, conservation, healthy outdoor recreation and research.
The park is divided into four zoo geographic areas: Africa, Asia, Tropical America and Indo-Australia. There is also a Herpetarium, Aquarium, Tropical America Free-flight Aviary, Macaw Canyon, Bear Grottos and Komodo dragon exhibit. Small World features a nursery and an animal contact yard where children can touch and interact with domesticated animals.
